Chania Airport to Balos by car

Choose the boat or the land approach first

Balos is not a straightforward airport-to-beach transfer. From Chania Airport, follow the signed road toward Chania and join the north-coast road west toward Kissamos. At Kissamos, your plan splits: park for a boat excursion, or continue toward Kaliviani and the peninsula access. The boat option avoids driving the rough final road. Allow a separate beach day after arrival rather than tying a boat departure to an uncertain flight and car handover.

Rental permission matters more than vehicle height

The land approach includes an unpaved section followed by a walk down to the lagoon. An SUV booking does not automatically permit that road or cover damage there. Ask the actual supplier about Balos access in writing before choosing this option. If it is excluded, leave the rental on an authorised paved route and use another means of reaching the lagoon. Take water and footwear for the walk; the climb back happens after your time in the sun.

Use Kissamos as the practical service stop

Buy supplies and check fuel around Kissamos before heading farther onto the peninsula. Follow the current parking and access instructions on arrival; do not assume the final parking area has spare capacity. For a boat trip, use the operator’s exact port and boarding instructions and check the return sailing. Wind and seasonal schedules can change the plan. A small car is sufficient for the paved airport-to-Kissamos leg, provided everyone’s luggage fits out of sight.

Check the route before departure

Check current driving directions. Road conditions and traffic can change; allow additional time for collection, stops and parking.
